The bots I am familiar with are automated programs people write/use to monitor or automate certain things, like IRC activity. Some are used to cheat in online games, allowing characters to continuously do actions without input from the player.

sometimes bots are there to fill space or sometimes on games there their so you have someone to play with
like in counter strike.
